Deuteronomy reflects on Israel’s past mistakes, but Moses urges the people not to repeat those mistakes when entering the Promised Land. Israel’s entry fulfills the promises made to the patriarchs, but if the people fall into idolatry or fail to keep the law, they will be exiled. Deuteronomy is largely a set of sermons Moses delivered shortly before his death, right before Israel headed into the Promised Land, after some forty years in the wilderness. It is motivational, urging Israel to obey the covenant and laws given forty years ago at Mount Sinai. In other words, do not repeat the rebellious disobedience that caused your fathers to die in the desert. The New Testament contains over eighty quotations from this book. This 64-page devotion takes you through the thirty-four chapters of Deuteronomy in 30 days.
Comment: God promised the Promised Land. He has a promised land for each one of us, and He said He would fight for us and with us, but so often we reject His help. Can you see your promised land? Can you see God’s help? Will you embrace it?
Prayer: Father, thank You for giving us these Ten Commandments. They must be important to You. You already repeated them twice in the first five books of the Bible. May we hear them today the way they were delivered with a voice of consuming fire. Holy Spirit prevent us from taking them for granted. Stir our hearts to live according to these commandments that it may be well with us all the days of our lives.
