The Apostle Paul visited the Asian port city of Ephesus and pastored the church there for about three years. Ephesus boasted of the temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world and a grandiose theater where over 20,000 Ephesians chanted, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians.” That is the environment Paul was in. The two main themes of the Book of Ephesians are: 1) Christ has reconciled all creation to Himself and to God; 2) Christ has united people from all nations to Himself and to one another in His church. These two things happen by faith alone through His grace. This 21-page devotion takes you through Ephesians one chapter a day for six days.
Comment: If you are asked why God should let you into heaven, would you say, “I have been a good person”? That is not what Ephesians chapters 1-3 say. We are hopeless, destined for an eternity in hell, as sons of disobedience and children of wrath. But God, but God, by His grace, not your own doing, opens heaven to us as a gift.
Prayer: Lord, help us walk in a manner worthy of Your calling. Help us put off our old selves, renew our minds, and put on a new self, more pleasing to You. Guard our mouths, Holy Spirit, so we can be uplifting instead of tearing down other people. And, Lord, even when it is uncomfortable, help us be kind to one another, tenderhearted to those around us.
