On its face, the book is the story of two betrothed Israelites who looked forward to their marriage. Is it more? Early Jewish interpreters saw it as an allegory of God’s love for Israel. Early Christian interpreters saw it as an allegory of Christ’s love for the church. Now, it is more understood as a love story between a simple shepherd and the Shulamite shepherdess. The fact that Song of Solomon is in the canon of Scripture affirms that sexual delight occurs only after marriage.
We will understand the Bible views sexual union between a man and woman as a natural, beautiful thing; that God sanctioned sex in the context of a loving relationship between a husband and a wife. Marriage is a gift from God. Before spending hundreds of dollars on marriage retreats, books, or counseling, read Song of Solomon and recommend it to other married couples. This 21-page devotion takes you through THE Song of Solomon in eight days.
Comment: Remember the love, the joy, the celebration expressed on that special day when you gave yourself to your special lover. When you said things like: “for better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health.” Now you have experienced all those things. Looking back to the reasons you got married in the first place, might spark some of that passion once again.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, bless marriages today. Speak into the hearts of all who need to be reminded, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine . . .” (v. 3). For all of us, Lord, become that third strand in the relationship that binds us together.
