Day by Day Through the Bible: Sixteen Days in Romans - Digital Download
I call Romans the Ph.D. of the New Testament. Others call it the Christian Manifesto or the Constitution of Christianity. It is a high-level book of Christian thought. The theme is the revelation of God’s judging and saving righteousness in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Of all of Paul’s writings, it is the fullest expression of Paul’s theology, filled with lofty theological ideas and vocabulary. Romans is the most complete teaching about God and our relationship to Him. It presents an irrefutable argument for our need for a Savior and the eternal plan of God Almighty to draw sinners to that Savior. This 39-page devotion takes you through Romans one chapter a day for sixteen days.

Comment: Right off the bat, Romans answers some of the most pressing questions we have in our day. First, what about people who “don’t know” about Jesus? Let’s see what Paul has to say about it (vs. 18-20). Those verses answer that question. Everybody knows about God. If it is only through His creation, everybody knows. But I believe, also, that it is internal. God has put an awareness of Himself in every human life. He reminds us we are without excuse (vs. 22-23). In other words, human beings exchange the worship of the immortal God for the worship of manmade idols. God does not force us to worship Him (vs. 24-25). I think Romans 1 answers that very question. What about those who don’t know Jesus? Everybody–God created everybody–to know Him through His own creation and an instinctive knowledge of God in each one of us.
Prayer: Lord, we thank You these words Paul just described were not just for Abraham. These words Paul wrote are not just for the Jews, but they are for us today. It all applies to us and we can be counted as righteous, those “. . . who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord” (v. 24). That is what gives us our justification. And we thank You that You are making it clear in the Book of Romans. Continue to teach us we are saved by faith, not by works, not by being good, but by believing in You. We give You the praise. In Jesus’ name, amen.
