Ezekiel 27 | The USA Like Tyre?

In Ezekiel 26, we discussed the city of Tyre. Today, that discussion continues with a lament over Tyre. Tyre was rich, wealthy, and enriched others. Is the USA the Tyre of our day? Please read or listen to Ezekiel 27.

Commentary by Allen J. Huth

In my personal Bible reading journals from 1997 and 2006, I have nothing related to this chapter, so we will look at 2016 when I read chapters 27 and 28 on the same day. Concerning Ezekiel 27, I wrote, “The glory, beauty, importance, and success of Tyre are outlined in 27. Reflected in beauty, ‘great wealth of every kind’ (v. 12), your abundant jewels, ‘you satisfied many peoples . . . you enriched the kings of the earth’ (v. 33). Sounds like a great place, like Paris, Singapore, London, New York today, or the USA. Yet, Tyre falls:

Now you are wrecked by the seas,
in the depths of the waters;
your merchandise and all your crew in your midst
have sunk with you
(v. 34).

you have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever
(v. 36).

“Even the mighty fall.”

We learned in chapter 26, Tyre was an island and a coastal city on the coast of Israel. We see here in chapter 27, it was economically blessed. It sounds like it was a beautiful city, a rich city, a city bustling with activity. It was “perfect in beauty” (v. 3), and great in wealth of every kind, according to verse 12. Abundant in goods and great wealth, according to verse 18. It seemed like the place to be, according to verse 33, you satisfied many peoples; with your abundant wealth and merchandise you enriched the kings of the earth.” Yet, the tide turns in verse 34, Now you are wrecked by the seas, in the depths of the waters; your merchandise and all your crew in your midst have sunk with you.” Concluding with verse 36, The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; you have come to a dreadful end and shall be no more forever.”

Digging Deeper

The questions raised in chapter 26 still remain in chapter 27. Was Tyre destroyed? Did it become a bare rock? Did it have a dreadful end forevermore? We need to keep going into chapter 28 to find more answers. But, as I referred to in one of my journals, it seemed much like the USA, yet God judged it.

We too seem to think we are perfect in beauty. We have great wealth of every kind. We are filled with abundance of goods, and we trade with countries all over the world. We satisfy many peoples, and we enrich kings all over the earth. God judged Tyre, and we will find out why in chapter 28. If He did not spare Tyre, will He spare the USA? Are we guilty of the same sins as Tyre? We will find out in Ezekiel 28.

Prayer

Father, we thank You for your abundance of blessings. Tyre sounds like a beautiful place. You blessed it with beauty and abundance. You satisfied people, and You made people wealthy. That is probably Your heart’s desire, Lord. You want to bless us exceedingly, abundantly, beyond what we think or imagine. Tyre sounded like such a place. Teach us, Lord, what happened to Tyre so it does not happen to us. Continue to reveal Your truth to us in this wonderful Book of Ezekiel. We ask it, in Your name. Amen.
